| History |
The first Southern African trials using Macfix® additive for Cold Mix Asphalt from the United Kingdom were
conducted in the Western Cape in October 2007, where a pothole was filled in Ottery, Cape Town. To date the
repair is still intact and in fact has blended into the surrounding material making it almost indistinguishable from the
existing road surroundings. Since then extensive tests and trials have been conducted throughout South Africa
with phenomenal success.
A Community development project was undertaken in conjunction with the Ugu District in Kwa Zulu Natal during
2009. Over 5200 potholes were repaired and in excess of 70 members of the community were effectively trained
as Pothole Repair Personnel.
At the beginning of 2010, National Asphalt joined forces with Asphalt Technology Solutions to create a jointly
owned company, National Cold Asphalt, which formally obtained the license for MacFix® from the UK based
company Macismo International. Due to the extensive network of the National Asphalt group, incorporating Akasia
Roads, situated in Bon Accord, Pretoria, National Cold Asphalt has the capabilities to produce and service virtually
all nine provinces, with the high quality Storage Grade Road Repair Cold Asphalt Materials. After extensive
internal trials from the company has also introduced a Storage Grade Pre-Fill Base Material, which is ideally suited
for the South African “Deep Pothole” repair scenario. A large number of the potholes found on our national road
network are deeper than 50mm, which in turn are expensive to repair with conventional bagged Cold Asphalt. Due
to the larger aggregate size and special formulation of the pre-fill base material, the amount of material required to
repair the potholes is substantially reduced.
In August 2010, two Buffel front end loaders were purchased from Qualiprod, to increase the productivity of the
entire operation at two of the plants where the bulk of the cold mix product is currently manufactured. At present a
mobile plant is in the process of being upgraded to ensure a fully self contained unit, that will further enhance the
company`s capabilities of servicing the entire country.
Ongoing trials are in progress to address the ever changing landscape of Road Repair and Maintenance and to
ensure that National Cold Asphalt remaining at the cutting edge of technology breakthroughs within the Cold
Asphalt industry. |
